A clear acrylic tray with «تفضلوا» in Thuluth, holding a dallah, four cups and a dish of dates on a majlis table

A majlis serving tray is chosen by three things: what it carries, where it sits and what it says. Ours are acrylic, made to order in our workshop: a calligraphy tray of 30 × 26 cm is AED 115 in clear and AED 165 gold-tinted, and an engraved transparent tray of 41 × 26 cm starts at AED 75. Delivery anywhere in the UAE is a flat AED 25 per order.

What it has to carry

Count what goes on it every day. Our calligraphy trays are 30 × 26 cm and 5 cm deep, in 5 mm acrylic: room for a dallah, a few cups and a small dish of dates, as the pictures on each tray's page show. For a larger spread, sweets and fruit beside the coffee, the engraved transparent trays are longer, 41 × 26 cm and 4 cm deep.

Clear or gold-tinted

Clear acrylic disappears on a wooden table and lets the calligraphy and the cups do the talking; it suits a modern room and a light majlis. Gold-tinted acrylic warms under evening light and sits well beside a brass dallah and a patterned rug. Every calligraphy tray comes in both: «تفضلوا», the word a host says as the tray is set down, is AED 115 clear or AED 165 gold-tinted, like the rest.

The words on it

A tray is read while it is being used, so the phrase belongs to the moment of serving:

Verses of the Qur'an and the names of God are better kept for the wall than set under cups and plates; Qur'anic verses for the home covers where they go. If you would rather have no words at all, the arabesque flowers tray (AED 75) carries an engraved pattern instead. Every tray is in serving trays.

Which script

Naskh and Ruq'ah are read at a glance across the table; Thuluth is grander, a phrase that is also an ornament; Diwani and Kufi are read first as pattern. The six scripts explained shows each one.

Your own words

Every calligraphy tray opens in Mashq Studio: change the phrase, the name or the script, see it in 3D, and order your version. A tray in your own words is made for you, so check the spelling before you order; it cannot be returned for a change of mind.

Sets that go together

A calligraphy tray bought with a calligraphy tissue box takes AED 25 off the box at checkout, and a coffee-phrase tray bought with a coffee mug takes AED 10 off the mug. For Ramadan, the Ramadan set on a leather tray (AED 225) brings a dates box, a mabkhara and two mashrabiya pieces on a stitched leather tray.

Looking after it

Wipe it with a soft cloth and a little mild soapy water, never an ammonia glass cleaner or a scouring pad: acrylic scratches more easily than glass. Keep it out of strong sun, and set a hot pot on its own coaster rather than straight on the acrylic, since heat can warp it. More in how to care for acrylic décor.
