Description
«بشنو از نی چون حکایت میکند» — “Listen to the reed, how it tells its tale” (Rumi, Masnavi, line 1). The first line of the Masnavi, and the most famous opening in Persian literature: the reed flute laments being cut from the reed bed, and the whole poem's argument about longing is in that first breath. It is the piece for a music room, a study and anyone who has lived far from home. Nastaliq, with the reed's long vertical strokes.

Where it hangs. In a music room, a study, or the home of someone who lives far from where they grew up. Nastaliq hangs its words on a sloping line, so one Persian line reads well wide: an A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) above a desk or a piano, an A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) or 50 × 70 cm above a console.
Giving it. For a musician, a reader of Rumi, a friend who has moved abroad. Anyone who knows Persian needs no explanation of the Masnavi’s first line; for anyone who does not, one sentence on the gift card is enough.
