«إن مع العسر يسرا» — “With hardship comes ease” (Quran, Sūrat Ash-Sharḥ 94:6). Not after hardship — with it, in the same breath; the verse is repeated twice in the sura, and scholars read the repetition as a promise that one hardship never outweighs two eases. It is a verse people hang in a new home, a new job or a hospital room, and send to each other in a hard week. Diwani, on canvas, framed or rolled.

Where it hangs. A verse of the Quran goes at or above eye level, on a clean wall, never in a bathroom. In a new home that is usually the entrance or the living room: above a console, an A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) or 50 × 70 cm; above a three-seat sofa, 100 × 70 cm or 90 × 120 cm. In a new office or beside a hospital bed, a framed A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) is the size that fits.
The script. Diwani was the hand of the Ottoman chancery: its letters run into one another and climb, so four words become one shape that reads as ornament from across the room and as the verse from close by.

▸ How do I look after it?
Dust the canvas with a soft, dry cloth, never a damp one, and hang it out of strong direct sun. Behind acrylic glass, wipe the glass with a soft cloth and a little mild soapy water — never an ammonia window spray or a paper towel, which cloud and scratch acrylic.
